IBM Analytics Helps Jet Airways Save $6 Mn Per Year

By Biztech2.com Staff

IBM has announced it has enabled Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, to more accurately calculate, track and report aircraft emissions. Realising this significant milestone as a part of the Strategic Outsourcing construct allows Jet Airways to use advanced analytics to map the carrier’s carbon emissions, optimising its fuel usage by detailed analysis of each flight.

Jet Airways had signed a strategic 10-year business transformation agreement with IBM to streamline and consolidate its IT operations. This association has helped Jet Airways to focus on their core business and improve operational efficiencies, as well as delivering a seamless customer experience. IBM’s Integrated Emission Management System gives Jet Airways a process to analyse and calculate individual aircraft emissions, which is a complex process involving comparison of flight records and fuel usage data contained in multiple systems ranging from internal aircraft systems to regional navigation data and flight records. The solution ensures that all flight emissions are properly calculated, and reporting is accurate and timely.

“In FY 2011/12, domestic air traffic grew at a rate of 12.9 percent, creating a huge demand for fuel which accounts for a major expense for any airline. Creating an energy efficient airline is a top priority and we are committed to the environment and a greener world. With IBM’s solution, Jet Airways will be able to evaluate carbon foot print not only at the fleet level but also at the aircraft level. It will help us optimise the fuel usage and thereby create a positive impact on the environment” said Sudheer Raghavan, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways. “Two years ago, we engaged IBM to help us transform our core IT Infrastructure to keep pace with rapid business growth projections and add to our competitiveness in the marketplace. Since then, our relationship with IBM has grown from strength to strength, allowing us to save approx $6 million per annum currently.”

As a strategic partner, IBM provides a host of services to Jet Airways, including datacentre operations, end user services, central helpdesk, network management services, server storage operation, and security services. IBM is also responsible for application management services for the carrier including ERP, flight operation, revenue management, roster and crew management, cargo management, customer relationship information system, aircraft maintenance and operations system, baggage reconciliation system and sales force automation.

“In order to take advantage of the strong growth potential in the Indian aviation market, it is critical for airlines such as Jet Airways to continuously transform through business and technology innovations. With its deep technology expertise, IBM has not only brought flexibility and scalability to the carrier’s operations but also helped Jet Airways gain competitive advantage and strengthen its leadership position. Not only does this ensure that Jet Airways has one of the most eco-friendly operations in the industry, it allows them to have better control and visibility into one of the largest cost a carrier has," said Ramesh Narasimhan, Director - Client Servicing, Strategic Outsourcing, Global Technology Services, IBM, India/South Asia.
