>>> WEEKLY E-COMMERCE MANAGEMENT UPDATE—AUGUST 27, 2000 <<< *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Friday, we were accidentally involved in the war against e-mail "spam". We were trying to send an e-mail containing material for this update from one of our mail accounts to another and it was returned, with a message saying that the domain of our "to" account (IDT) was blocking all mail from the domain of our "from" account (AT&T). We did not see the returned mail message until later, when we were wondering why the message had not been received. We tried re-sending the message, with the same results. A phone call to IDT technical support confirmed that ALL mail from ANY sender from the AT&T domain was being blocked by IDT due to a spammer from the AT&T domain having sent junk e-mail to the IDT domain. Furthermore, the block might remain in place for several days, until AT&T informed IDT that they had located the spammer and blocked further service. We were further told that this was standard practice —that AOL had frequently blocked all IDT mail in a similar situation. Yahoo, Netzero, and Hotmail were also mentioned. This was a real eye-opener for us. Fortunately, we had other means of moving the necessary files. But it means that if it were important for us to send e-mail to someone at a domain that was being blocked to our sending domain, it would have been impossible —until the block was lifted. And we only realized the blocking occurred because we were expecting a message that never arrived. We wish there were an easy solution. We appreciate the reduction of junk e-mail that the anti-spam efforts have provided. On the other hand, having our e-mail being treated as junk, just because we are sending from the same domain as a spammer and possibly being unable to send an important message really disturbs us. This week, we received e-mail from 2 different readers warning us about an e-mail tax bill, Bill 602, that is supposedly sailing through Congress and requesting that we protest the bill and forward the e-mail message to everyone we know. As we do with all such warnings, we sought more information. By merely opening our web browser and typing "Bill 602" in the search window, we quickly determined that the only sites that came up were about web hoaxes. Yes, Bill 602 is a hoax. We quickly sent this information to all of those we could identify from the e-mails forwarded to us. What are the lessons? Before you forward anything to everybody you know, independently verify what you are forwarding. Whenever we notify all our contacts about, for example, a new e-mail virus, we get the story from a reputable publication and send that story, with the date and byline. A virus creates a problem because it spreads so rapidly over the Internet, and denial-of-service attacks shut down servers by bombarding them with messages. But if I send a message to 100 people and each of them sends it to 100 more, and so on, and so on, I have started the same kind of geometrically increasing traffic on the Internet and e-mail systems as these malicious attacks.
